Simulation offers both educational and research opportunities
for rare events. Simulatin is vitally important in both
research and training for topics such as surge capacity and
mass casualty incidents where the true events are rare and
cannot be relied upon to provide reliable enough exposure. At
MedStatStudio we are world leaders in simulation of emergency
department surge capacity using the SurgeSim software. In
addition, we have experience in discrete event simulation of
complex processes
SurgeSim allows simulation of the critical initial Emergency Department management when increased surge capacity is needed. Events such as mass casualty incidents and infectious pandemics place extreme stress on Emergency Department flow, and knowing how an Emergency Department will respond is vital for Emergency Planning
SurgSim allows Emergency Department and Intensive care staff to test the Surge Capacity of their own departments using their own staff and Emergency Management Plans.
SurgeSim is an excellent team-building exercise, as participants are
forced to work together as a group to a single common goal of managing
an Emergency Department during a crisis
MedStatStudio researchers are working to bring simulation
performance evaluation to the standards set by other
modalities in medical education. Until methods to evaluate
performance can be depended upon to be accurate, simulation
cannot be relied upon for evaluative purposes. We can provide statistical
and logistic support to ensure that methods used to evaluate
performance are valid and reliable. This includes evaluation
by global assessment tools, skills indicators, and other
performance markers.
